The Golden Number

The Golden Number, is also known as The Golden Mean, Phi, the Divine Section, The Golden Cut, The Golden Proportion, The Divine Proportion. It is a special number that is typically use in geometry, architecture, art and some other areas, that is approximately equal to 1,618. It is an irrational number (a real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction), so it does never finish. The first few digits look like this:

1,61803398874989484820... (etc.)

The symbol of The Golden Number is the Greek letter "phi".

It is used a lot, because many artists and architects believe that this number makes the most pleasing and beautiful shape. Since many years ago, lots of monuments, artworks and buildings have the Golden Ratio in them but nowadays we are not sure if they designed it in this way or if it is a real coincidence.

Here we can observe some pictures in which is shown how does the Golden Number is "inmersed" in really known monuments, such as The Parthenon in Athens, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
